He was a frequent visitor at the Mohawk Community Resource Center (MCRC) in Blairsden. He enjoyed the library and some of the other conveniences. As it is for so many residents of Eastern Plumas County, the resource center is a familiar and important community meeting place. In the course of his many visits, he got to know the MCRC coordinator, Holly Johnson. After a while and many conversations later, Holly realized that this guy had an important story to tell. He was a senior citizen, a longtime resident of Graeagle, and a part of the history of Plumas County.

Paul Bianco’s grandfather came to Ellis Island from Italy in 1917, probably to escape the world war that was destroying Europe. Paul’s father was a World War II naval veteran and Paul was born in San Francisco in 1946. He was in his late 30’s, on a long horseback ride on the Pacific Crest Trail in 1985 when he stopped for a while in Graeagle. In his words he was “overwhelmed” by the appearance and ambiance of the community. He saw an impressive looking gent that was striding through the park. The guy stopped to pick up a piece of trash and put it in his pocket. Paul decided then and there that he wanted to be a part of this community. He found out later that the impressive stranger was Harvey West.

Paul stopped at the Graeagle Stables to ask for a job. Both the horses and the grounds were in terrible shape. He offered to work at the stables in order to improve the conditions and establish himself in the community, knowing that someday he would own the business. After less than two years working as a wrangler, he made the right offer to buy and become the new owner. The next ten years saw a great improvement in the stables. Paul worked hard to make the customer’s experience something special. One of the most popular trips was a ride and an overnight at the then, bed and breakfast Inn, White Sulphur Springs Ranch. Paul had turned the dilapidated Graeagle Stables he found in 1985 into a successful tourist attraction and an important chapter in the history of the White Sulphur Springs Ranch. The Board of Directors of the Ranch has donated a legacy brick to honor Paul’s connection to the Ranch. The inscription reads “Paul Bianco, Graeagle Stables 1985 – 1995”. This brick on the grounds of the historic Ranch will ensure that he will not be forgotten in the community he so dearly loved.

Devastating Fire in Blairsden

Early Friday morning, September 15, 2023, fire erupted in the building occupied by Gumba's Family Pizza and The Village Baker destroying both businesses. The businesses are located at the East end of Bonta Street in Blairsden, CA. Gumba's Family Pizza and The Village Baker have been in Blairsden for many years while the building dates back to at least the 1940's. Locals and visitors alike will miss these businesses as important parts of our community. Gumba's Family Pizza owners Matt and Elizabeth Cruz are huge community supporters. Each year White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR) and Gumba's team up for a fundraiser to support the work WSSR does for the community, our schools, and for our disabled children and disabled veterans. This year's event was scheduled to take place on September 20th at the restaurant.

Instead of holding a fundraiser to support WSSR, we have decided to hold a fundraiser to support Gumba's Family Pizza, The Village Baker and especially their employees.

Brooks Faris - 2023 Craft Fair Grand Prize Raffle Winner

Congratulations to Brooks Faris, this year's Grand Prize winner at the Graeagle Professional Art & Craft Fair, August 19-20. Each year White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR) is provided a booth by the Professional Artists and Crafters organization during their August Craft Fair in the Graeagle Park. There WSSR sells beverages and holds a raffle to raise funds for the work we do in the community. This year many vendors at the fair also contributed raffle prizes to the event. This year's Grand Prize was a Camp Chef Rainier 2X Grill/Griddle Combo kit with a carrying case donated by Camp Chef. Camp Chef is a great company with great products that supports the work we do at WSSR for our schools, the disabled and our community.

Raffle, Beer & Root Beer Sales raise Funds

Raffle, beer and root beer sales raise funds for work at historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch. Thank you to the Professional Artists & Crafters (PAC) group, who organized the event this weekend in the Graeagle Park, for allowing White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR) to once again set up a booth at their Craft Fair. Each year WSSR sets up Porta-Saloon and holds a raffle at the August fair to raise funds for the restoration and improvement of historic WSSR. Work at WSSR is dedicated to restoring and improving the ranch for public use, with a strong emphasis on ensuring accessibility for the disabled. This year Porta-Saloon added root beer to their beer sales, and it was a HUGE success. Many artists and craft fair vendors participated in the raffle by donating additional items they made to the drawing.

This year's grand prize raffle winner was Brooks Faris who won the Camp Chef portable Camp Stove and griddle, along with many other fine hand-made craft items from vendors. Thank you to the many vendors that were kind enough to donate their unique hand-made items to the raffle and thank you to Camp Chef for donating one of their fine products as the grand prize. Starbucks Comes Through Again

A big thanks to Starbucks in "Philly" today for their kind donation of coffee in support of the work we do at White Sulphur Springs Ranch. I especially want to thank Andie Boerner and her manager at the 1528 Walnut St, Starbucks store in Philadelphia, PA 19102, for taking the time to consider our request for support. Andie was busy today but, took a moment to stop work and contact her boss about my request. I sensed she was genuinely interested in helping. Her interest paid off and her manager was kind enough to approve the donation.

I hope Andie's boss finds her interest in helping others to be an admirable quality for a young person as I do.

Their donation will be used in our raffles this month supporting our restoration work at the ranch which benefits our schools, disabled children, disabled veterans and our community. Summerfest 2023 a Great Success

If you missed us this year you missed a great event featuring Matt Axton and Bad Moon and "Clarky's BBQ, Smoke and More" who served a ranch style dinner with all the trimmings. With almost 300 attendees, guests enjoyed a wonderful dinner, great western music, live and silent auctions, raffles and fortunate weather.
Two special activities that day included our wine chest winner, Richard who had the lucky key to the wine chest, winning $800 in premium wines from Bogle Vineyards & Winery, William Cole Vineyards, Sue Collins Family Winery, and Jay & Barbi Hendrick. Our raffle prize winner was Michelle Maciel. Michelle won a beautiful Sterling Silver, Gold filled, Hand Engraved buckle crafted by Vogt Silversmiths of California valued at $799.
Thank you to all our volunteers, ranch members, business members, donors and sponsors for making Summerfest 2023 a great success!

REMEMBERING TOM

Our friend, Tom Cooley passed this life on March 7th of this year. Born in Michigan he came to California in 1997 and finally to Portola in 2003 where he was twice elected mayor. No job was too big or too small. He was mayor but he also cleared brush along the river walk in Portola. He and his wife Linda became active member volunteers of the Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council in 2012 so they could be a part of the restoration of the historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch in Clio.

Tom had many talents. Besides being a successful businessman, he was a private pilot and a professional photographer. He was an accomplished graphic artist and produced many flyers for activities like Summerfest and other fund-raising events. He could also be seen each year helping to set up the Summerfest grounds….pulling ropes and setting up tables. As usual, no job was too big or too small. He was a man for all seasons, an unselfish friend and a steadying influence to all that worked with him.

The Board of Directors of the Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council have authorized a legacy brick with Tom’s name inscribed, to be placed on the grounds of the historic ranch site. He will always be a part of the site he loved and worked so hard to improve. He will be sorely missed.

New Face on an Old Friend

In September of 2021 the front porch of the old house at White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR) began to get a facelift that had been planned for years. Motorists traveling on Highway 89 near the entrance to the Mohawk Valley saw the improvements progress day by day. Each time they passed the historic ranch site, the front face of the house looked a little different….a little better.

In February and March of last year volunteers John Barker and Don Maddelena made significant progress. All of the structural rebuilding was completed and approved by the County. Some of the original 140 year old balusters had been restored. New ones were made to match. Skirting and hand rails had not been seen on the old ranch house since they were destroyed in 2008. Great pains were taken to restore the original character of the historic ranch house.

It was designated an historic structure in the 1983 Plumas County general plan. In spite of this the old house was in the process of being dismantled in 2008 when the community took notice and started the campaign to save what was left of the historic site. The Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) was formed in 2009 and the restoration began. Community members who would like to be a part of this effort should call Judy Porep-Lullo at 530-836-0254.

A WET CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION AT WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS RANCH

Tuesday the 10th of December, 2022, was the day of the Christmas party for members and invited guests. A big crowd was expected but only a few actually braved the terrible weather. It was a deluge outside! Some of the old time Eastern Plumas County residents couldn’t remember a more fierce rain in the month of December. Many remarked that if it was snow instead of rain nobody could have attended because the roads would be impassable. Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) Volunteers Yvonne Ware, Barbi Hendrick and Judy Porep-Lullo had arranged for the old ranch house to be festively decorated, the dining room table full of goodies and Santa ready to greet guests and take photos with the kids. Unfortunately, none of the attendees were young enough to sit on Santa’s lap.

The raffle prize was a Christmas wall decoration and a 50-dollar gift certificate to a local restaurant. It was won by Joanne Grasso of Graeagle.

The renovated old ranch house never looked better. Docent guided tours were available for the asking. The front façade, recently rebuilt, showed a lighted, front porch. There was a Christmas wreath at the front door. The rest rooms functioned, and the elegantly furnished living room lent a warmth to the whole scene, in contrast to the tempest going on outside.

Major Drainage Control and Event area Expansion in the Summerfest Venue

A major draining control project was undertaken in the Summerfest venue area this season along with an expansion of our spring water system and electrical outlets. The work was done by volunteers Robert Ware, Bob Hermsmeyer, Jim Maul and Tim Buckhout. This work enlarged the Summerfest area for greater event capacity, while providing better drainage control within that area and more convenient access to the spring water system for our 3rd grade Living History School Days program where children from both the Portola and Quincy school districts spend a day on the ranch each September learning what life was like on a working ranch in the 1850's. This work will also enhance space in the area for our future amphitheaters.

Gumba's Fundraiser a Huge Success

COMMUNITY PARTNER SUPPORTS WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS RANCH

Gumba’s Family Pizza sponsored a fundraiser at their restaurant in Blairsden on September 21st, 2022. Gumba’s donated 20% of all food purchases made between 11 am and 9 pm on that day, to benefit the restoration of White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR).

The event was organized by Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) volunteers Tim Buckhout and Dee Kelly. Community members have seen Tim outside the Graeagle Market selling raffle tickets for this and other events. He is dedicated to make WSSR accessible to disabled children, disabled veterans and the community in general. His Porta-Saloon can be seen at Summerfest at WSSR and at craft fairs in Graeagle. All beer sales are donated. Drivers on highway 89 with keen vision can see him moving dirt at the WSSR site. He and his helpers Robert Ware, Bob Hermsmeyer and Jim Maul are transforming the landscape to achieve the vision that MVSC members have for this historic property. Tim is a specialist in getting businesses to donate goods and services. The grand prize at the Gumba event was a Weber BBQ smoker donated by Big R Supply in Sparks, Nevada. It was won by Ronnie Gedatus from Sacramento. Tim delivered the prize personally.

Matt and Elizabeth Cruz are the owners of Gumba’s. The event on September 21st was the 4th annual fundraiser to benefit WSSR. The restaurant was crowded with patrons the whole day. Eighteen prizes were raffled off and two custom carvings were auctioned. It is this kind of community support that the MVSC depends on. Big thanks go to the owners and staff of Gumba’s Family Pizza. Thank you so much for your great community involvement and support.

Living History School Days Continues in Style

After a two year Covid layoff, the kids came back to White Sulphur Springs Ranch in 2022. The previous School Days was in 2019, which was the last one in an unbroken string stretching back eight previous years to September of 2009. Unlike in previous years which only welcomed students from Portola, this year 3rd graders from two different schools stepped back in time. Over 100 kids from Quincy and Portola participated, helped by 16 teachers and 20 volunteers from each community.

Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) volunteers showed what the ranch and the community was like in the old days. The event was organized by a five member planning committee. Six different educational stations were coordinated by Cathy Danielson and directed each day by Jim Maul

Each day began with a group welcome and introduction by Bob Hughes. The kids were then broken down into small groups to begin their tour of six different stations. First one was a tour of the old ranch house given by docent and volunteer chairman Judy Porep-Lullo, in period costume. The kids then proceeded to 5 different educational stations. There was frontier cooking, shepherding, Maidu life, fruit box construction and washboard laundry

The pioneer cooking station was manned by Cathy and Bob Danielson. The kids ate Johnny cakes and made homemade butter. They learned about the daily life of a pioneer child. The next stop was “shepherding” with real live sheep! Anna Harvey and her crew from Harvey Farms showed the many products we get from sheep and the kids were allowed to see these animals close up. In station number four Janice Cross and Hillary Hughes led the kids up a local trail to show them Maidu Indian grinding rocks and local artifacts. At station number five Janet and Leo Reihsen, with a bunch of volunteer “carpenters”, showed them how to make miniature wooden fruit boxes. In 1919 the California Fruit Company purchased the land along Graeagle Creek in order to cut and mill lumber to build shipping boxes for fruit which they provided to growers throughout the State. The old fruit exchange still stands in Graeagle and the blue anchor California fruit logo can be seen on this stone building. The students got to keep the wooden boxes they produced. At the final station Janine Wolcott showed them how the laundry was done in the old days. The kids hauled water and used old fashioned washboards

Each day ended with the classes assembling on the deck for a group photo taken by Linda Cooley
Living History School Days 2022 was partially funded by the Safeway Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to bettering the lives of people in the neighborhoods. In a letter dated May 23. 2022, Wendy Gutshall of the Foundation’s Northern California Division, sent a check for $2500 to Janet Reihsen of the MVSC. The MVSC depends on support like this to complete the work of restoration at the historic ranch site. It is especially welcomed because this grant specifically supports the School Days program for 3rd graders in Portola and Quincy schools

The mission of the MVSC is to serve as a community gathering place and a center for living history. The many hardworking volunteers hope that these students will be future supporters of White Sulphur Springs Ranch and that their children will be able to come here one day to enjoy the site and learn about the proud history of the Mohawk and Sierra Valleys.

GOLF PRO GETS A BIG WIN
Each year, at the Professional Artists & Crafters Marketplace in Graeagle, White Sulphur Springs Ranch volunteers conduct a raffle to benefit the restoration of the historic site. This year the winners were Tessa and Kelly Schnase. Kelly is a golf pro at the Graeagle Meadows golf course.

It has become a tradition that at this two day show in the park, Tim Buckhout sets up his Porta-Saloon, sells beer, and runs the big raffle. He was assisted by eighteen Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) volunteers who took shifts manning the raffle table. This year the prize was a four-burner barbecue set along with gifts donated from the almost fifty craft persons participating in the show. The winning ticket was selected by a twelve-year-old boy drafted by the organizers to reach in and grab the lucky ticket. The winners were called, and they showed up immediately to enthusiastically claim their many prizes.

Last year the proceeds of the raffle were donated to the Dixie fire victims. This year the proceeds will assist the ongoing improvements at the White Sulphur Springs Ranch site in Clio.

OLD NEWSPAPERS FOUND AT WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS RANCH

The past has come to life many times during the work associated with the restoration of this historic property…..and it happened again on the 12th of April 2022.

New carpets had been ordered and John Barker, Robert Ware, Dennis Horton and Don Maddelena were painstakingly ripping out the old stuff. Suddenly, under layers of the old worn and torn carpet, in one of the upstairs bedrooms, some old newspapers appeared. The date on the masthead of an old San Francisco Chronicle was April 10, 1905. The front page had articles dealing with the participation of the Russian fleet in the Russo-Japanese war. Another article on the front page described a hit by the Mafia on a local San Franciso man. More than the front page was found but the interior pages were not explored for fear of them disintegrating into paper flakes.
Another publication found was entitled “Butchers and Stockgrowers Journal”. The date on the front page was June 11, 1904. It announced itself as the “Official Organ of the Butchers’ Board of Trade”. The quoted subscription price was “$2 per year….in advance”. Most of the ads and articles had San Francisco locations.

Another old tabloid sized paper entitled “Woman’s World” had a date of November 1904. It was published in Chicago and cost 25 cents a year or 5 cents a copy. It contained an ad for a “ball bearing sewing machine” the cost of which was $5.75. Another one was for “Hayner Whiskey”….”4 full quarts for $3.20,”express paid”.

It begs the question; how did these publications from faraway cities like San Francisco, and especially Chicago, find their way to rural Plumas County in the early nineteen hundreds?

The old newspapers were testament to the fact that the layers under the old carpets being replaced were laid down at least 117 years ago! It was another historical highlight experienced in the long and fascinating process of restoring White Sulphur Springs Ranch.
After a couple of lean pandemic years the volunteers of the Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) are getting back into high gear. Summerfest, the primary fundraiser, is coming back on the 26th of June. The old ranch house has a restored façade and vintage furnishings and will be available for tours during Summerfest.
New MVSC members are always welcomed.

POPULAR VIRGINIA CITY BAND BOOKED FOR SUMMERFEST 2022

Plans are firming up for the return of one of the most popular events in Plumas County. Summerfest 2022 at White Sulphur Springs Ranch is scheduled for the last Sunday in June. A local tradition, Summerfest had to be canceled for two years due to the pandemic.

This is an outdoor event complete with entertainment, food, a silent auction, a no host bar and tours of the historic ranch house. Hours are from 3 to 7:30 pm on Sunday the 26th of June. This year the featured entertainers will be the Comstock Cowboys from the Bucket of Blood saloon in Virginia City. The Band makes the old West come alive with authentic garb like six guns, chaps and spurs. They last appeared to a record crowd at Summerfest 2017.

White Sulphur Springs Ranch overlooks the entrance to the Mohawk Valley at 2200 Highway 89, just south of County Road A-15 in Clio. Work Goes on at White Sulphur Springs Ranch

Motorists traveling on Highway 89 at the entrance to the Mohawk Valley have witnessed major improvements going on at the old white house at White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR). It's like viewing a progressive slide show. Each time they pass the site it looks a little different….a little better.

During the month of February and the first week in March volunteers made significant progress on the side of the ranch house facing the highway. One of the driest months in California history made for good working conditions. All of the structural rebuilding has been completed and approved by the county building inspector. Some of the original 140 year old balusters have been restored and new ones have been made to match the old ones. The public has not seen skirting and handrails on the downstairs porch since their destruction in 2008. Every effort is being made to restore the original character of the historic ranch house.
Wi-Fi is now available at the ranch house. Suddenly, the 19th century building has jumped into the computer age.

The easing of Covid-19 restrictions has put new life into the scores of Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) volunteers who are finally looking forward to a normal spring and summer fund raising season.

The first organizational meeting for Summerfest, the big annual outdoor event, has taken place after a two year absence. Details will be forthcoming as spring arrives.

A NEW START FOR THE POOL AT WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS RANCH

In an 1855 account of a trip across the plains, a woman traveler named Lydia Milner Waters wrote the following. “Two miles above us was a bathhouse with water from a warm sulphur spring. Harris and Groves who owned it, gave us liberty to use it, and we did, every day. The water had an exhilarating effect, made one feel as lively as champagne.”

A full size swimming pool, fed by the warm springs, was built on the grounds of White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR) in 1928. It was demolished in 2017 after almost 90 years of service, due to deterioration which was beyond repair. It was enjoyed by many generations of families and remains a fond memory for citizens and visitors to Plumas County.

On the 14th of December 2021, the board of directors of the Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) voted to commit funds specific to the development of a new pool on the original site. Much of the necessary infrastructure is now in place, such as a septic system and bathhouse, so timing was right for a serious attempt to begin raising funds for the new pool. This was an act of courage for the MVSC since, because of the pandemic, Summerfest, the major fundraiser has had to be cancelled for the last two years. The MVSC will try to raise the necessary funds by soliciting direct contributions from the public, by applying for grants, and by designating at least 10% of all income to the pool fund. The goal for 2022 is to raise $100,000 toward the completion of the new pool.

The MVSC is asking for assistance in any or all of these directions. The MVSC is a 501(3)c non- profit organization. Contributions are tax deductible. Contact Janet Reihsen at jreihsen@earthlink.net if you would like to help.

NEW BRICKS ARRIVE AT WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS RANCH

A legacy brick is a concrete casting in the shape of a brick that contains a sentiment, tribute or greeting from the buyer and is laid in a prominent place on the grounds of the White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR). On Friday, October 15, a new shipment was laid in place by a crew of Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) volunteers.

In 2016 a new fundraising campaign was started by the MVSC. The campaign slogan was “Build a legacy, brick buy brick.” One hundred bricks were received in 2016 and laid in place outside the north entrance of the old ranch house. Another 100 bricks were just received and have already been installed. The location of all the bricks received so far is temporary. They will be moved to a permanent location when the landscaping plan for the entire ranch is complete.

Covid-19 has dealt a serious blow to the fundraising activities of the MVSC. The sale of Legacy Bricks has become an important contributor to the restoration efforts at the WSSR.

New Septic Tank and Pump Station Donated by Jensen Precast in Sparks, NV

Today we received our new 3,000-gallon septic tank and 1,500-gallon pump station, donated by Jill and Kurt Jensen, owners of Jensen Precast in Sparks, NV. Their son Noah actually delivered the tanks representing the family and Jensen Precast. This system will now be connected to our new leach field complex that was installed by Rick Joy, Joy Engineering, Portola. The materials for the leach field were donated by Western Nevada Supply, Sparks, NV and the installation was donated by Rick Joy. This septic system and leach field will handle the eventual buildout at White Sulphur Springs Ranch, accommodating crowds for the replacement swimming pool and future entertainment center with two amphitheaters. Both the pool and the amphitheaters will have special accommodations for our disabled children and disabled veterans.

The Northern California, "Dixie Fire" is now considered the largest fire in the nation. The town of Greenville has been devastated and thousands of families, including children, have been displaced from their homes.
Many have lost everything.

The promotor of the August 21-22, 2021 Art & Craft Marketplace in Graeagle has graciously provided White Sulphur Springs Ranch a venue to help raise funds for these fire victims.

This coming weekend, White Sulphur Springs Ranch and Mountain Hardware and Sports in Blairsden, have teamed up to hold a raffle to support the Dixie Fire victims. The raffle will begin on Saturday, August 21 at the Art & Craft Fair and conclude with the drawing on Sunday, August 22 in the afternoon.

Laying Perforated Pipe in Tier 1 of the Drain Field

Early this December, the long-awaited leach field that will provide service to all facilities at White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR) was completed. The work was done under the watchful eye of Project Manager Kent Hanford and Project Engineer, Richard Short who donated their time to coordinate and manage each phase of this important project. Richard Short donated the design work for the leach field and septic system that has been designed to handle all facilities at WSSR. Work still needs to be done to connect the leach filed to the pool area, house and other planned facilities on the ranch, but completing the leach field is a huge step forward in the progress that must be made to begin grading and additional work in the spring of 2017.

Work began on the leach field in November when Jim West Tree Services cleared trees from the leach field site and the 1800-foot long path for the pipeline from the leach field to the pool area. Jim West has been a long-time supporter or WSSR and once again donated much of his time and equipment to complete this phase of the project.
The list of materials needed to install this commercial leach field and septic system was significant. Western Nevada Supply, a great supporter of WSSR with a long history of community involvement, agreed to donate all the plumbing related materials for this project. Our thanks to Christine Hogan, Andrew Siderius and Rod Smith for making this donation possible.

Installation of the leach field was done by Rick Joy Engineering and foreman Jim Berg in early December. Rick Joy, who is another great supporter of WSSR and a very benevolent person in his own right, agreed to donate installation of the leach field. The project took about two weeks and was done under difficult weather conditions on some days, but as the picture above illustrates, that did not compromise the quality of the work that was done. According to Project Manager, Kent Hanford and Project Engineer, Richard Short, Rick Joy Engineering made every effort to ensure we were satisfied with the progress of the work from day one. His team of workers, supervised by foreman Jim Berg, were very professional and their work was of the highest quality.

I must say that this is what “community” is all about. Members of the community coming together and donating their time and money to support this worthwhile community project called, White Sulphur Springs Ranch, is simply heartwarming.

While there are many volunteers that have worked hard to get us to this point and who certainly deserve our thanks, I would encourage everyone who looks forward to the day when WSSR is ready to open, to please take the time this Christmas season to say thank you to those who have helped us complete this phase of the restoration, for without their help this simply could not be accomplished.

The new deck is an important addition to the facilities at WSSR. It will see some beautiful wedding ceremonies and important lectures. The best thing of all, it is handicap accessible for our disabled children and disabled veterans.

White Sulphur Springs Ranch Raises Funds to Support the Dixie Fire Victims

The volunteers of the Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) put some of their own fundraising efforts on hold and made a big contribution in support of Dixie fire victims. The MVSC are stewards of the historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR) in Clio.

On Tuesday September 21, MVSC president Mark Cowan presented a check for $23,630.27 to the Common Good Community Foundation (CGCF) specifically to aid Dixie fire victims. The CGCF was founded in 2012 and is a non-profit, tax exempt, charitable organization designed to support programs and projects in Plumas County. The Dixie fire relief fund was established on August 7, 2021, and to date over $180,000 has been raised.
The funds donated by the WSSR were raised from a raffle held at the Graeagle Craft Fair, an online crusade via the website, donations by the vendors at the Fair and contributions from Mountain Hardware & Sports in Blairsden. The check was presented to CGCF president Colleen McKeown, and CGCF secretary Carol Snow, at the front door of the old ranch house.

Cowan said, “This is what can happen when our members, our families and our friends and neighbors come together to help people in times of need”.

The MVSC is dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of the WSSR. The ranch was designated as an historic property in the Plumas County General Plan of 1983. Great progress has been made since the MVSC was formed in 2009. The Clio Stove is Back Home

The old story is that while sitting around this old wood-burning stove, the prominent citizens of a town called “Wash”, decided that the name of their city was too often mistaken for the town of Washington, in Nevada County on the south fork of the Yuba river. These citizens of Wash decided the new name of their community should be Clio, a name prominently cast into the door of the old stove they were looking at.
Clio is the name of one of the nine muses of Greek mythology. She is the patron of history. The dictionary allows the pronunciation to be either Clee Oh or Cl-eye Oh , but the people in and around Plumas County know that the only correct pronunciation is the latter one, ie, Clio.

The stove was cast at the Bridge & Beach foundry in St. Louis, MO. The company name changed a few times due to a change of owners, but this particular name first appeared circa 1857, which ties in well to the origins of White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR) ranch in 1852. No reference could be found as to why the name Clio was boldly cast in the door of the stove. Since the stove also has an identifying model number cast in (no 22), the name Clio had to be a specific brand within a complete line of this kind of stove. This fact then adds credence to the belief that the name Clio, refers to the Greek muse mentioned above.

In 1974, the old stove was found, along with some other old furnishings, in the attic of the old ranch house at WSSR. It was cleaned and put in one of the upstairs bathrooms. It was then purchased by Molly’s Bed & Breakfast at the infamous auction of 2002. The owner graciously gave it back to the, Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) soon thereafter.

During the restoration of the historic ranch house the stove was loaned to the owners of the Blackbird Inn which was then doing business in the building that was once the old general store in downtown Clio. As mentioned above, this was where the early citizens of Wash decided to change the name of their town to Clio. This building now contains the Ricochet restaurant. When most of the interior renovation of the old ranch house was complete, the stove was reclaimed by MVSC volunteers and put on display in the newly remodeled living room at WSSR.

HISTORIC RANCH HOUSE GETS SOME NEW OLD FURNISHINGS

The old ranch house at White Sulphur Springs Ranch has received some wonderful period furniture from generous donors interested in preserving the original interior look. The old structure was built in 1852 and has survived some serious and sometimes careless, remodeling down through the years. However, Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) volunteers have started to bring it back to life. There is a living room, dining room kitchen and bath on the first floor plus five more rooms and a bath upstairs. All these rooms have furniture, wall hangings and photos, donated from collections from as far back as the late 1800’s. Since June of 2019, heirloom items such as chandeliers, a roll top desk, a hand braided rug and brass candlesticks, have been received.
MVSC volunteers are very proud of how the interior of the old ranch house has been restored; so much so that they invite interested individuals to experience a personal tour. Membership chairperson, Janet Reihsen and/or volunteer coordinator Judy Porep-Lullo, are available to guide these tours on request, and by appointment. The MVSC continues to bring White Sulphur Springs Ranch back to where it belongs….an historic monument to the early days of Plumas County and the Mohawk Valley.

RENOVATION CONTINUES AT WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS RANCH

The pandemic has slowed but not stopped Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) volunteers from the ongoing job of rehabilitation of the old ranch house. On Wednesday, July 15, fifty four of the original balusters were painted in a homemade assembly line operation. It took a lot of repair to get the balusters ready for painting. It was important that no reproductions but only the original pieces were used so volunteer Robert Ware glued, sanded and reassembled each of the hundred year old railing supports. They will soon be installed on the North and South porches of the ranch house.

Covid-19 has dealt a serious blow to the fundraising efforts of the MVSC. Both Summerfest and the rummage sale had to be canceled to protect the volunteers and the public. The Board of Directors is asking the public to support membership drives and contribute directly to the MVSC when possible, so that basic expenses can be covered. Progress on the Ranch House Roof and Bath House

Travelers on highway 89 at the South end of the Mohawk Valley may have noticed a few changes at the historic ranch site. On the first of October a major roof repair was completed on the ranch house by Kenny Davis Roofing in Quincy.

In addition, progress moved forward with the new bath house as siding, donated by Allura through Truckee-Tahoe Lumber was added to the structure by volunteers under the direction of project leader Tim Buckhout. The final paint job was donated by Clio contractor Miles Huggins Painting.

A big thanks goes out to additional bath house contributors for this most recent phase of construction. Those donating their time and expertise included: Jeff Miller, Kenny Davis Roofing, Wesley Boyd of WESFAB Construction in Portola, Bear Cub Industries, and Gumba's Family Pizza.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS RESTORING THE RANCH HOUSE

Gumba’s Family Pizza on Bonta Street in Blairsden is hosting a fundraiser to help in the rehabilitation efforts at White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR) and the public is invited. On Wednesday September 25, from 4 to 9 PM, Gumba’s will donate 10% of all food purchases to the Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC). This includes all dine in and takeout purchases. The raffle prize is a Smoker Barbeque Grill. Raffle tickets will be available all day at Gumba’s on September 25 and in front of the Graeagle Store and the Graeagle Frostee on Fridays and Saturdays preceding the event.

The MVSC is dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of WSSR. Restoration of the main ranch house is scheduled to begin this fall. It has been a long and difficult process to raise the necessary funds but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Many local contractors have stepped up to donate labor and materials, but additional funding is needed to continue the project.

The Professional Artisans CO-OP (PAC) will present a Fine Art & Craft event at the Park in Graeagle on the 17th and 18th of August. Hours are 9 to 5 on Saturday and 9 to 4 on Sunday. The Graeagle Art and Wine Event will feature all handmade fine art and crafts. Patrons are encouraged to discuss the work and interact with the artists. There will be no imported goods. The Fair will also include beer and wine tasting plus food and music.
The PAC was formed in 2016 when a group of artisan friends decided that they would rather control their own shows as opposed to working with promoters. At last count there were over 170 artists and craft persons in the non-profit organization. The PAC event list includes 7 Art & Craft Fairs each year. Locations range from Mt Shasta in early June to Chico at Christmas time. Vendors are charged a reasonable fee and share the responsibilities for putting on the show instead of paying professional organizers.

A rummage sale to benefit the rehabilitation of the historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch(WSSR) will be held on Saturday June 8, from 8 am to 2 pm at the Ranch site on Highway 89 near Clio. House tours will be available so that attendees can see the improvements recently made to the interior of the old Ranch House.

Donations will be accepted on two collection dates, Friday May 24 and Saturday June 1, from 10 am to 2 pm. Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) volunteers will accept gently used goods such as household items, furniture, sporting equipment, seasonal items, functioning electrical items and collectibles. The event organizers think that the timing of the event takes advantage of spring cleaning activities throughout the area. The MVSC boasts over 200 Members. Donated rummage sale items are accumulating rapidly in all rooms of the old Ranch House.

Items that cannot be accepted are computers, television sets, mattresses and bedding, clothing or shoes, children’s car seats and books.
The MVSC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and future use of this historical landmark for public activities and events. Receipts will be available for all donations.

Business Neighbors Help Raise the Bath House

On the two freezing days after Christmas, business members and Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) volunteers began construction of the new bath house at the White Sulphur Springs Ranch site (WSSR) in Clio. The bath house is part of an overall restoration effort at WSSR and a major component of the planned community ADA swimming facility that will accommodate all users, including children and the disabled.

Businesses from Redding, Reno, Quincy and Clio all contributed the necessary building materials and labor to raise the new bath house. General contractor, Taylor Carr, owner of Artifex Homes in Clio donated the construction crew. Dave Little with Sierra Pacific Industries in Quincy donated the framing lumber and their Redding Division provided the windows. Andrew Cross, general manager of the Truckee-Tahoe Lumber Company in Truckee donated all the paneling, roof sheathing and hardware.

The MVSC depends on the generosity of community businesses and individuals to achieve the goal of renovation of the historic Mohawk Valley site. Businesses as far away as Reno also helped. Western Nevada Supply, Reno Truss, DHC Supplies and Titan Construction Supply were all major contributors. The complete list of companies that contributed to the project are listed below.

A great big shout out to PENHALL-RENO for donating their concrete drilling services at White Sulphur Springs Ranch. PENHALL drilled 9 holes through a 30" thick concrete wall at the ranch in preparation for the installation of our new water system that will service the ranch house, the bath house and most importantly the future swimming pool.

This was a huge help to our project and we thank Pat for his expert drilling services and Greg Howder with PENHALL-RENO for allowing this generous donation.

This year’s Summerfest, the 10th annual, will occur Saturday July 7, 2018 (TICKETS) . The Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) continues to move forward in their efforts to preserve the history and heritage of White Sulphur Springs Ranch.

Entertainers at this year’s fundraiser will be Dave Stamey and The Black Irish Band .

Dave Stamey is one of the most popular Western entertainers working today. He was voted entertainer of the year five times by the Western Music Association.

The Black Irish Band offers Irish, Scottish, Spanish, Italian and American Folk music. They present acoustic music in an upbeat way that appeals to all ages. The Black Irish Band has been around for 28 years, written and recorded 96 original songs, and hail from the gold rush town of Sonora.

This year the food service will feature burgers with ranch style beans, fruit, chips and dessert. Besides the food and music, the Summerfest Picnic will offer live and silent auctions and a no host bar featuring "Porta-Saloon" offering beer, wine and soft drinks.

Gates open at 3:00 PM and entertainment starts at 4:00 PM.
Tickets are available online, ( click the Golden Ticket above ) and at Eco-Centric in downtown Graeagle. Ticket prices are $50 per adult. Tickets for kids 12 and under are $15, online or at the door.

White Sulphur Springs Ranch overlooks the beautiful Mohawk Valley at 2200 Highway 89, just south of County Road A-15, in Plumas County, California.
This is an outdoor event. Attendees should bring a lawn chair.

UPDATE FOR THIS EVENT

Approximately 300 attended this year's Summerfest event at White Sulphur Springs Ranch, on Saturday, July 7, 2018. The weather was a bit overcast which helped to keep the temperatures down on an otherwise hot day.

Our wine, beer and a margarita bar topped off a country style BBQ in the afternoon and set the tone to listen to live music from "Dave Stamey" and "The Black Irish Band".

Our ice chest raffle winner was Spike Condit from Reno.

Marking the Final Locations of the Pool and Bath House

Progress continues in January 2018, on the pool and bath house. January 13-14, construction crews set elevation staking and determined final locations for the pool and bath house. Some grading was done and the foundation and concrete pad for the bath house was prepared. Crews did additional work to shape the dirt walls of the new pool and removed small trees and old underground piping that is no longer needed.

Favorable weather conditions have allowed project manager, Kent Hanford, to continue work on site. Kent is donating his time as project manager to coordinate and oversee work on the pool, bath house, septic & leach field system, well and water infrastructure work and needed electrical upgrade for the project.

2018 has been a remarkable year for progress at Historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch

Did You Know in 2018 Volunteers Contributed more than

21,644 hours and drove more than 14,286 miles

- January -
Marked the ground for the final locations of the pool and bath house.

- June -
Graded and set the proper elevations for the pool and bath house.
Painted and performed repairs to the rail fence along highway 89.

- July -
Installed French drains and surface drains to protect the future pool and bath house.

- September -
Penhall donated their time to core drill the almost three foot thick concrete wall at the back of the house to allow water and electrical access.

McGarr excavation installed the underground water system to supply water to the house, bath house and the pool.

Volunteers trenched bath house footings and prepared the site to pour concrete.

It is important to acknowledge the contractors who have donated their services or provided services at a much reduced cost to help us accomplish work this season. It is equally important to acknowledge the many volunteers who have worked tirelessly to help prepare for each phase of the project.

Volunteers install Conduit for the Main Electrical Service to the Bath House

On the 26th and 27th of October a crew of volunteers took another step in the restoration of White Sulphur Springs Ranch.(WSSR) Trenches were dug and conduit laid to extend the primary electrical feed to the pool site. Project Manager Kent Hanford planned and organized the two day effort. The next steps will be to complete the conduit extension along with some final grading.

After this first stage of the conduit work, the piles of demolished snack shack and pool concrete were hauled out over a two day period. The time and equipment for this was donated by Joy Engineering.

The Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) continues the long process of bringing the site up to current standards so it can be shared by all members of the community.

LARK KENNEY AT TANTAU RANCH

Award winning singer and entertainer, Lark Kenney, will perform Sunday August 6, 2017, at the beautiful Tantau Ranch. Proceeds will benefit the restoration of White Sulphur Springs Ranch. The Tantau Ranch is located at 101 Tantau Ranch Road, just south of the intersection of Highway 89 and County Road A15 in Clio, CA. There will be a potluck dinner at 5:30 followed by the concert at 6:30.

Miss Kenney is a complete entertainer. She will sing some Broadway favorites and other songs that will make audiences want to get up and dance. She has been described as a mixture of Bette Midler and Joan Rivers.

Bring your favorite dish to share with the other attendees. This is an outdoor event. All should bring a lawn chair and their own beverages. Cost is $25 per person at the entrance.

This year’s White Sulphur Springs Ranch fundraiser was attended by over 300 happy guests at the Ranch overlooking the beautiful Mohawk Valley.

The Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) presented its 9th annual event to aid in the restoration of this property. This year’s entertainment featured the popular Comstock Cowboys from Virginia City. They looked like a posse from the old West, complete with authentic garb including pistols and spurs. The last time they appeared at Summerfest was in 2015. As usual they brought some of their fans from Virginia City where they appear regularly at the Bucket of Blood Saloon. The weatherman cooperated as Sunday the 25th seemed to be the first day of a cooling off period. About 80 volunteers worked like crazy to put on a ranch barbecue dinner, live and silent auctions and all kinds of special features. There was a portable saloon, a buy a brick campaign, a wine trunk winner and shuttle service to and from the huge parking area. New volunteers are always needed and if you think you want to participate in the restoration of this historic property call volunteer chairwoman, Judy Porep-Lullo at 530-836-0254.

Removal of the Old White Sulphur Springs Ranch Swimming Pool

On Thursday, May 25, 2017, Joy Engineering brought in two large excavators and began the process of demolishing the pool and the concrete pads for the bath house and snack shack. The pool was installed around 1928 and was used for decades by Plumas County residents. Many locals learned to swim in this swimming pool that was fed by naturally heated warm spring water that flowed from the Sierra Nevada mountains on the ranch. Also removed was the concrete plunge bath (pictured left) that was built prior to the turn of the century and used by travelers visiting the Mohawk Valley. Many travelers came by way of stage coach which stopped at White Sulphur Springs Ranch until 1907 when the railroad came through and replaced the need for the stage.

Significant restoration is expected in 2017 as we complete the final phase of the septic system, install underground utilities and look ahead to installing a new swimming pool that will continue to be fed by the same naturally heated warm spring waters that have flowed from the Sierra Nevada mountains on the ranch for more than 160 years.

When restoration efforts are complete, White Sulphur Springs Ranch will once again be a place for the community to enjoy family gatherings, weekend activities, special events and of course swimming as has been done for many decades.

A special thanks to Rick Joy, owner of Joy Engineering for once again donating his time, equipment and expertise to removing the old pool and other concrete on the property.

Site Clean-up at White Sulphur Springs Ranch

Seventeen Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) volunteers, aged 67 to 82, worked like teenagers as they removed all of the debris from the breakdown of the old bath house and snack shack at the historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch site. It was the sunny but cool morning of April 28 when this hardy crew carried and stacked old boards of all shapes and sizes into a huge dumpster. The total load came close to 15,000 pounds and the group did it in about 2 ½ hours. It is estimated that the two old buildings were erected in 1928, which is the year the old pool was built. It was hoped that the lumber from the two buildings could be used in the restoration process but time and insects had taken their toll and little of the lumber was usable. Some of the boards had been recycled from earlier construction in the 1890s.

This was another phase in the restoration of White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR). Last December the leach field, that will service all facilities at the site, was completed.

The next step will be the removal of the cyclone fence that surrounds the old pool. For more information about the history of the area and the goals of the MVSC, visit our website.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS RANCH TOWN HALL MEETING

Without the support of volunteers, local residents and businesses much of what MVSC has accomplished would not be possible and for that we say thank you to each and everyone of you for your continued support.

Restoring a property today requires oversight and approval by many public entities. In addition, MVSC has acquired some public grants since 2009 which have required even more oversight and approval. While the process is slow, progress has been made and we are now moving forward with the first phase of construction. Here are some recent important accomplishments.

Completed architectural plans for restoration and development of White Sulphur Springs Ranch with a substantial portion of time donated by the contractor. This includes plans for the pool and utility infrastructure with details depicting the location of several structures such as the bath house, snack shack, amphitheater, food service building near the amphitheater, restrooms, lawn area, picnic areas, landscaping, parking, handicap access and more.

Purchased a 3.1 acre parcel necessary for the installation of a leach field. This property has sufficient space for a leach field that can handle both present and
future development of White Sulphur Springs Ranch.

Located a local engineer who donated their time to design the leach field and septic system.

Obtained permits to begin construction of the pool and surrounding area.

HistoriCorps - a national firm that specializes in the restoration of historic structures on public lands, has taken a positive interest in restoring the facade of the ranch house. We are weighing their proposal.

Our vision for the restoration of White Sulphur Springs Ranch is still the same as it was in 2009. We want this historic site to be used by the community as a gathering place for environmental and cultural education, warm afternoon picnics, swimming in the naturally heated spring water pool, hiking, biking, family reunions, weddings, concerts, and simply enjoying the spectacular evening views across the Mohawk Valley.

Across our nation it is unusual to find a historic property in good shape and worthy of restoration. It is rare to find a historic property of this vintage constructed entirely of wood and in such good shape, with considerable acreage, spectacular views, a naturally heated swimming pool, a perfect location for ease of access and use and it is right in our own backyard.

This opportunity drives the passion of our volunteers to succeed and we hope it will inspire others in the community to do the same.

While we have sufficient funds to complete this years project of installing the septic and leach field system we are far short of our goal to raise funds to complete the pool installation next year and need your help.

While we continue to seek grants to help with additional funding for the pool project, we ask the community to do what they can to help as well. Become a Ranch Member ($25 annually), a Business Member (starting at $250 annually), or simply make a Donation to help support this worthwhile community project.

More than 200 people attended the 3rd. annual Mumbo Gumbo dinner concert at Nakoma Golf Resort , Saturday, September 3, 2016, in support of restoring historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch in Clio, CA.

A sell out audience danced all evening to music by Mumbo Gumbo under a beautiful Nakoma sunset.

Guests enjoyed a wonderful Cajun dinner prepared by Nakoma Golf Resort and The Brewing Lair , in Blairsden, provided guests with their locally brewed premium beer.

Summerfest 2016 attendee Toni Carl (on the left) celebrates her success at opening a wine trunk with a value of over $350. One hundred and twenty keys were sold. Her key was the only one that fit the lock on the trunk. The wine trunk was only one of the many attractions of Summerfest 2016 which occurred this year on June 26. Musical entertainment, a delicious ranch barbecue and both live and silent auctions were provided to over 200 supporters of the restoration of White Sulphur Springs Ranch.

Another Huge Success and a Sell Out!

Over 200 guests attended the second annual Mumbo Gumbo concert, outdoors, on the fifth of September, at the Nakoma Resort. It was a benefit to support the restoration of White Sulphur Springs Ranch and included a buffet dinner along with the popular dance music of Mumbo Gumbo. The authentic Cajun style dinner included Cajun ribs and chicken and andouille sausage jambalaya. The Band started at 7pm and with one break, continued on till 10. The backdrop was spectacular! People of all ages were dancing on the wooden patio and on the grass in front of the band….all of this looking out over the golf course and the mountains beyond.

The MVSC, stewards of the restoration of White Sulphur Springs Ranch, cooperated with the staff at Nakoma to produce a fun evening for all. Proceeds contributed to replenish the fund used to purchase adjacent land necessary to install a septic tank and leach field.

The winner of our raffle for a Samsung 40" LED Smart TV with Full HD-1080P was Jim Hunter from Sparks, Nevada (on the left below). Jim said he had never won anything like this before and was excited to try out his new television. The television was donated by Aaron's, lease to own, in Reno.

A Huge Success and a Sell Out!

Almost 400 people attended the 7th Annual Summerfest at White Sulphur Springs Ranch on Sunday June 28. That was a sell out! The featured entertainers were the Comstock Cowboys who thrilled the crowd with toe-tapping, danceable, western and blue grass music.

Many of their fans came from Virginia City and even as far away as Texas and many were outfitted in Western costume. They danced and sang along and showed the Plumas County fans how much they appreciated their favorite entertainers. The evening musical favorite was the old Glen Campbell tune, sung with the new term “Comstock Cowboys” substituted for “Rhinestone Cowboy”. The event also included a tri tip barbeque, silent and live auctions and a key raffle that opened a chest of wine worth over 400 dollars. Karen Damon from Reno was the big winner. Her key opened the chest.

One of the six live auction items was a 3 day stay at a luxury home on the Stinson Beach Lagoon in Marin County.

The event was presented by the Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC). The MVSC has been working for years to restore the historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch site. The spring fed pool is the first priority and finally after much delay due to regulatory requirements, the MVSC is in the process of acquiring adjacent land that will provide a suitable leach field to serve the pool and bath house.

Results Announced !

For many years White Sulphur Springs Ranch has been a community gathering spot for Plumas County residents who enjoyed swimming in the warm springs pool and picnicking while overlooking the Mohawk Valley.

For some, White Sulphur Springs Ranch meant so much that they decided to be married there.

We wanted to celebrate those couples by encouraging them to share their stories with us so we could share them with you.

Beginning in February 2015 we asked couples to send in their stories and wedding photos. Some brave couples took the plunge with the promise, of course, that the contest winner would receive a dinner for two along with a 2015 family membership in the Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council.

As promised, on March 15, 2015, a drawing was held under strict contest rules and the winners selected. The "Wedding Photo Contest" winners for 2015 are:

Holiday Gathering for MVSC Volunteers

A grateful thanks to all our volunteers for making 2014 a super year. In December, the Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) hosted a holiday party at the historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch house and gave thanks to all the MVSC volunteers for their support throughout the year. The event was well attended and appreciated by all.

Mumbo Gumbo Fundraiser

The Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council presented an evening of Cajun food and great dance music at the Nakoma Resort and Spa, on Saturday August 30, 2014. This event was a fundraiser to purchase the materials necessary to rebuild the bath house at the historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch. The popular Northern California band, Mumbo Gumbo, appeared and featured a wide variety of great music at 7:00 PM. The septet has a dedicated following and blends many genres from rock to soul. The band recently played at the Kentucky Mine and is a regular in the summer music series at the Mine. Mumbo Gumbo’s music has been used in the hit TV show “Northern Exposure” and in the 2005 movie “Her Minor Thing” in which the band appears on screen. In addition to the music and the beautiful setting, Nakoma provided a Cajun buffet that included blackened catfish, po’boy sandwiches, Andouille sausage and assorted Cajun delicacies. Dinner started at 5:30 and music at 7:00 pm. Tickets were $35 for music or $50 for dinner and music. Advanced tickets could be purchased on the MVSC website, www.mohawkvalley.us or at the door. The JAWBONE FLATS BAND appeared at the Log Cabin Restaurant on Thursday May 1, 2014. The Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) offered an evening of food and entertainment at this May Day fundraiser in support of White Sulphur Springs Ranch. The food, including ribs, chili and salad, was served at 5:30 and music was offered at 7:30. The band was on its way to Sacramento, and at the urging of Alice Berg, MVSC Board member, agreed to appear for one night at the Log Cabin in Portola. Cost per person was only $20. This fundraising event was to support the renovation of the pool area, especially the new bath house, at the Ranch.
