PORTOLA HIGH STUDENTS PERFORM COMMUNITY SERVICE

Students from the fire science class at Portola  High School recently  came to White Sulphur Springs Ranch, to help cleanup the property  for the upcoming annual Summerfest event scheduled for Sunday June 28.  There was a lot to do since SUMMERFEST uses most of the habitable area of White Sulphur Springs Ranch and there was a lot of winter debris to be disposed of. Portola High students have a requirement to put in a certain number of hours of community service and with teacher Brad Miller’s leadership they fulfilled some of that requirement with hard work and efficiency on Thursday May 21.  The fire science class is unique to Northern California.  Students who successfully complete the course are qualified to be hired into the Forest Service. They recently worked directly on the fire line of a controlled burn conducted by the Forest Service.

White Sulphur Springs Ranch is located at 2200 Highway 89, ¼ of a mile south of the intersection of Plumas County road A-15. SUMMERFEST is presented by the Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council to benefit the restoration of the historic ranch site.

On June 28 the 7th annual SUMMERFEST gates will open at 3:00 pm. An afternoon of music, food and live and silent auctions begins at 4:00 pm. Admission is $45 per adult and only $15 for kids 12 and under at the door.  This year the featured entertainers are David John and the Comstock Cowboys.  Tickets are limited and advance sales have been brisk.  Tickets are available locally at Eco-Centric, Graeagle Mercantile, Red House Art and The Outpost in Graeagle:, the Eastern Plumas Chamber of Commerce in Blairsden and the Plumas County Museum in Quincy.  For more information call 530-836-2334 or go to the website at www.whitesulphurspringsranch.com .

The Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) and Portola High School have partnered to provide a community service work opportunity at the historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch.  Portola High students have a requirement to put in a certain number of hours of community service in order to graduate.  One of the High School classes that satisfies some of those requirements is teacher Brad Miller’s Fire Science Class.  In his class students learn the value of fuel reduction in forests to keep them healthy and prevent fires.  Students put that knowledge to work, while clearing brush for White Sulphur Springs Ranch.
