Our Story

The Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) was formed in 2009 by a community of concerned citizens whose mission is to connect people with their natural and cultural heritage and to provide a community gathering place through restoration and operation of the historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch.

Only a few months after receiving their non-profit status, the MVSC was awarded an acquisition grant from the State of California and along with a substantial donation from the landowner, purchased the historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch in 2010.

The original ranch was about 400 acres, however, the ranch house, barns, warm springs and swimming pool are on the remaining 39 acres which were acquired by MVSC.  Restoration of the 39 acre ranch for community use and development of community historical, environmental and educational programs are the primary focus of MVSC.

Restoration of the Ranch is completely dependent upon public and private DONATIONS from our community.

"MOHAWK MATTERS"

Connecting Resources, Our Community & Our Environment

The historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch (WSSR) lies at the headwaters of the Middle Fork of the Feather River watershed, within the Sulphur Creek subwatershed. The Feather River watershed encompasses a broad variety of terrain, climate, historic use, and flora and fauna and has long been recognized for its recreational, water and aesthetic values. An abundance of mountain rivers, lakes and reservoirs dot the landscape, creating both summer and winter recreational opportunities. Water originating from these drainages represents a significant component of the State Water Project and provides high quality water for hydro generation, agriculture, industry and cities in the south.

The Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council owns, operates and is currently restoring the historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch, including the main buildings, swimming pool and trails. Restoration is an expensive and time consuming process, however, when completed, it will allow the public to utilize the property for events, retreats, family gatherings, walking and biking on new trails, swimming and historical and environmental education. There are very few destinations in Mohawk Valley that allow the public access to its natural resources and to enjoy the scenic overlook of this pristine meadow in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Please join us by supporting this worthwhile endeavor. Your support as a new membervolunteer or donor will help to preserve this rare and unique piece of Mohawk Valley history for the benefit of our community and those who visit us.
